Construction Projects

What's Happening in the Next Several Weeks:

Computational Research & Theory Facility: The CRT project is currently installing underground utilities in Chu Road and the service road below Bldg. 50. This work started in December 2011 and is expected to be completed in April 2012. The first trench to add a new sewer line is almost complete and a second trench to add new water, gas and telecom data lines started February 3rd. The Blackberry Gate will be closed to vehicular traffic on most Saturdays in February and March with some Sundays as needed. Strawberry Gate will be open during these days for Lab access. During the week there will be traffic controls in place as work is performed on one lane of Chu Road.

Solar Energy Research Center: The Contractor Pre Bid Site Visit will be conducted on February 16th.

Seismic Phase 2:
General Purpose Laboratory:
The installation of the pier-supported roadway and the pre-structural steel concrete foundation work was completed in January. Current activities include the installation of the new South site electrical and communication vaults. Commencing in February, work will include the installation of structural steel, and ongoing installation of new utilities at the South and West areas of the project.
Bldg. 74 Modernization: Bldg. 74 is in the process of systematically energizing the electrical and mechanical systems. Interior finishes continue on all floors including paint, new ceilings, vinyl and carpet flooring. Underground utilities are nearing completion, allowing the site work to begin.
Bldg. 85 Slope Stabilization: The Bldg. 85 Interior Seismic Retrofit portion of the work has been completed. The pier "A" and tieback locations have been redesigned and are being priced. Interfering existing utilities have been defined and relocation measures are being priced.

Old Town Demolition: The demolition of Buildings 25A, 40, 41, 44, 44A, 44B, 52 and 52A has been completed. Funding is currently being pursued to demolish the remaining buildings within the central core of the Old Town area, namely Buildings 4, 5, 7, 14 and 16. The demolition of the subject buildings is part of an overall plan to remediate and redevelop the Old Town area of the Lab.

Building 51 Bevatron Demolition: Building 51 and Bevatron Demolition Project has been completed. Recent activities included the removal of the facility concrete floor slabs and foundations, the removal of contaminated soils, and the backfill and compaction of the area. The project was completed January 2012 with over 230,000 hours of safe work without a lost time accident or recordable injury. Following removal of the project demolition equipment and temporary trailers, the former Building 51 area will be paved for new parking and storage.
